Unit Focus Standards:
- Students know basic energy forms and the energy of motion. Focus on sound energy/pitch and wind/water as energy sources used to move objects. They know heat flows and heat energy conductors/insulators that change temperature or facilitate change. They understand objects move in different ways and speed is how motion is measured.
- Students understand the properties of matter, states of matter, how matter is measured, what magnetism is, and how matter can change. They know matter changes through burning, rusting, decomposing, and cooking.
- Students understand scientific process of asking questions, conducting investigations to answer questions, and communicating empirical evidence gathered during investigations.Compare results measured with tools used by different groups. They know scientists use models to explain how things work.
- Students know mineral properties and minerals make rocks. They know three categories of rocks and how they form. They know humans need resources from Earth and differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable resources. They identify Florida resources. They describe weathering, landforms, and erosion and how they affect Earth's surface.
- Students understand patterns in space stay the same but appear to change because of Earth's rotation and that the Earth revolves around the sun. They understand the relationship between the Sun and the Earth and its impact on the seasons.
- Students understand living things go through life cycle stages and inherit different characteristics that might be affected by the environment. They understand how seasons affect Florida plants, what are ecosystems, how living things get energy, what food chains and food webs are, how living things affect the environment.
